Students’ Motivation in English Learning amid Covid-19 Pandemic: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective

The pandemic of covid-19 has had a negative impact on schooling quality around the world. lack student enthusiasm to learn using digital platforms is one issue leading low education. Several prior types research have looked into how students perceive their motivation in face covid-19. However, modal analysis reveal students' through written personal views learning during epidemic Covid-19 remains relatively unexplored area. This aims expose students’ outbreak modality theory. 20 English Department students, Faculty Language and Arts, University HKBP Nommensen were involved this research. assigned write an essay about experiences opinions amid outbreak. consists approximately 250 words. was conducted mixed method. results showed that most used text probability 39.82%, afterwards frequency 27.60%, obligation 17.19%, inclination 15.39%, respectively. A medium level or category dominated each type modality. Regarding polarity, 159 (71.95%) words positive range, rest 62 (28.05%) located range. demonstrates throughout characterized as highly positive. findings different from previous same topic. Most revealed pandemic. EFL still motivated study lessons bring consequences future educational consider linguistic perspectives method, especially application Systemic Functional Linguistics meanings certain issues.
